How to build backlinks

Step One: Find out what people are linking to

The first step to get amazing backlinks is to exclude sites that already have great backlinks and investigate their link profiles. The rationale is that good content attracts links, as site owners feel compelled to share it with their audience. So in this first step, you are looking for pages with ‘lota links’, as they have already been proven to be worthy content.

Follow this process to find out which blog posts attracted the most inbound links. Note: For this entire blog post, we’ll use the fictional example of Jim’s Pet Shop, an online pet looking for links, traffic, and attention to his Cat’s toy line.

1. Install SEO for Firefox Toolbar (it’s free!)

2. Do a search in Google (for this example, I’m running a query for “Cat toys”), select the “Show   Options”    button (below the search box, left) and click “Blog” from the categories

3. Click the “100” option (just below the search box), which will give you the top 100 search results.

4. Once resolved, click on the “CSV” link (just below the search box), and export the result to the file F  Firefox for SEO gives you very good information, but for this practice, we just Want data for column “Y”!

We now have a collection of all blog posts about “Cat toys” that have attracted the most links. The next step in the process of creating quality backlinks is to see which sites are linking to these posts.

Step two: Find out who is linking

Now that we know which pieces of material are link magnets, let’s find out who is linking. Why is “who” important? This is because these website owners have already qualified themselves as link prospects by demonstrating their willingness to link to a particular type of content, which in this instance refers to “Cat toys” Content about So the chances are good that they can connect to the contents of our Cat toys.

So to locate the “we”, drag the CSV dashboard above, select each of the top posts that link, and drill into their link profiles. This can be done using the “Yahoo Page Link” button on the SEO for Firefox toolbar or you can use the Yahoo link command: link: http: //

It generates a list of all links pointing to this page, which subtracts any internal site links from the root domain, which looks like this:

Quality backlink data

After running this analysis for link possibilities, there are two sites that keep popping up in the link profiles of these top Cat toy posts: and Given their willingness to link Cat toy-related content, they are great candidates for the outreach campaign (included in phase five).

Now, if it is not yet clear, the move is intended to assemble a list of qualified prospects for outreach. This can be done with several data columns in a simple spreadsheet. For my own outreach lists, I like to collect data:

Target website URL: Notice the website name as well as the deep page I found that is linking

Contact Name: It is important to personalize your outreach letter; “To What It May May Concern” Addressing an email is for lazy and losers

Personal Email: Do not send an email or contact us at email @ black hole unless you prefer to ignore or delete your emails. I elaborate on the hard work to get a personalized email, in this article about 12 advanced tactics about finding someone’s email address.

Social Media Profile: What is their Twitter or LinkedIn handle? do not know? Find out.

Note: Additional information about the blogger or website to help personalize my outreach letters even more

Also, remember that bloggers are stable on staff on many blogs. So I recommend you dig around and find out which ones link to your type of content more often and also cite it in your notes section.

Step Three: why people are linking

To create linkable content, you must determine why certain pieces of content attract the link. Let’s examine the blog posts in the example above and see if we can understand why these five blog posts about Cat toys attracted a total of over 11K links. Are there some common elements, some common threads that make them so stringent?

It just so happens that the clues are very clear in this case: the top link artists are all articles about weird, weird, weird, or silly cat toys.

Build backlinks SEO

This is not really surprising because life can be pretty mundane, so people prefer anything that is out of the ordinary. So creating odd or funny posts or videos is often a surefire way to attract links.

Step Four: Create a Bait

To attract links such as top linkable posts, you need to create something of equal value. Now, I’m not saying copy it outright, and I’m not even saying that you need to reinstall the wheel. You can do something exactly the same, but make it yours. If it is a simple widget, create a widget. If it is a strange list, make a strange list. The point is, the content you create needs to be valuable and interesting to your target market.

For example, take the premise above that people like material about funny Cat toys.  I have thrown together some ideas for articles that I understand based on effort and difficulty:

Easy: Make a blog post about a funny Cat toy: It’s not completely original, but I’m sure it attracts a stray link or two.

Harder: Make an article about “10 Strange Cat Toys Your Cat Has Gonna Love”. It involves more work, but more opportunity for links.

Wicked Hard !!: Set your big brain on fire, get super creative and start a contest on your pet store website where people collect pictures of their Cats with bizarre Cat toys and vote, All with top pics win a prize. You create a contest page (with contest details, photo galleries, and voting component), write a blog post announcing the contest, and announcing the winners, along with the winners’ pictures, the names of the Cats, and their owners.

Now, which of these ideas is the most intriguing? What do you think will attract the most links? The point here is that effort matches results, which is why I listed each idea by the level of labor. In my experience, the harder I work on a piece of content, the more links are attracted. This is not rocket science, but it mentions.

Step Five: Pimp Your Content

Okay, so the time has come to market your content through blog marketing. You are about to reach the site owners, key influencers, and bloggers in the backlink profile for the sites that you have collected in your pitch list from step two. Now, you will not boldly ask them to link to your page about X in their request. This method is very clear and heavy. Instead, you are going to use a more subtle approach by writing to make them aware of your content and ask if they are ready to “share” it with their audience, as they do.

Add further validity and to remind the blogger of the article) and it was a lot of fun. I liked it so much that I shared it with my friends on Facebook and Twitter (actually tweet the article and leave the link that tweets here for proof).

Given that you are a fan of weird Cat toys (and who is not right?), I want to tell you about a contest I am running at Jim’s Pet Shop (link on your website) called ” Strange “. And the Whackie Cat Toy Photo Contest “.

(Include details about the competition)

If you think the competition is notable, it would be great if you could share it with your audience. Here’s a link to the contest page and a link to the blog announcement (note: I like to add lots of links to outreach emails; this gives bloggers more options and often includes most of the links I send Are; article).

let me know.

Thank you for your time.

Create a backlink strategy

Now, anyone who has ever engaged in a coordinated, targeted, personalized, and aggressive link outreach that I outlined above understands its value. But you’ll find naysayers who say “link outreach doesn’t work” and this is mainly:

  • They do not create anything of value
  • They are unable to dedicate themselves effectively to marketing materials
  • They never even tried it, yet discredited it because they are lazy

Whatever it is, I am here to say that I follow the same procedure that I have laid out in this article and it works for me.

Also, don’t fall for the old adage that all you need to do to attract links is create great content. Just because you write good content does not mean that the web will automatically notice. You have to hit them on the head with this. It is okay to be self-propagating, in fact, it is important. No one else is going to pimp your stuff, so it’s up to you.

A final note on link outreach is that once you get all the steps and have an outreach list and an email template, you can help someone out about sending an email. I usually send emails and ask them to customize and personalize each email in different areas, using the data I have collected in my outreach spreadsheet.

The conclusion

So as I said at the beginning of this post, everything I discussed here works. As with anything worth doing, it is worth doing. Now if it is not for you and your heart, it is not okay. There’s no shame in accepting that there’s more work than you signed up for. But don’t hold back from becoming a bitch in the forum in a few more months. How did you create 300 social bookmarking links and you can’t go to Google’s page one, so you don’t need a magical way to create amazing backlinks? Not involved in thought or effort.

The point, top-ranking sites work their tail off to get quality links. To keep pace with them, you need to put the same level of effort into content strategy and link marketing. If your goal is to beat them, then you will need to do something even more extraordinary. And dumping a dozen comment spam links on some poor man’s “do follow” blog doesn’t seem to work.
